HOW MUCH POWER & INTELLIGENCE ARE YOU HARNESSING?

Feelings and Behaviors Are Signals So You Can Get More of What You Need

We all strive to get our needs met – we can’t help it. We’re wired to seek safety, connection, autonomy, contribution, and fulfillment. Even though it can seem paradoxical at times (like autonomy and connection).  For me, and other entrepreneurs I’ve witnessed and worked with, there’s a nagging paradox: the more intensely we chase external achievements, the more elusive genuine satisfaction and deep connection become.

More of what you truly need will come from a deeply counter-intuitive approach: learning to listen to your feelings and behaviors, not as flaws to be managed, but as precise, powerful signals. Once you’re here, you can begin to relate for real through attunement, and get what you’ve desperately been needing (understandably, you’re human)!

We’re human, all things considered, it’s absolutely beautiful and awe inspiring to be human.

Sometimes though, things happen as we’re developing that distort our intelligent design, dysregulating and misdirecting us,

Making emotions something that hurt us and others, and do not help us get our real needs met.

The Hidden Language of Our Inner World

Imagine your feelings and behaviors as an intricate, real-time communication system. That knot in your stomach before a difficult conversation, the sudden urge to scroll endlessly through social media, the uncharacteristic sharpness in your tone with a loved one, or even the relentless drive to work late into the night – these aren’t random occurrences. They are signals.

Each sensation and feeling, each impulse, each repeated action is a message from an internal part of you, trying to alert you to an unmet need. Sadness signals a need for comfort or release; anger, a boundary violation or injustice; anxiety, a perceived threat or need for safety. Even seemingly maladaptive behaviors, like a surge of perfectionism or chronic people-pleasing, are often ingenious, albeit costly, strategies developed by parts of us trying to protect deeper, more vulnerable needs that went unseen or unmet long ago.

We often find ourselves perpetually striving, perpetually exhausted, and subtly (or not so subtly) disconnected from the very life we’ve worked so hard to build, the very people we most want to see fulfilled and benefited.

The Misattunement Trap: Why We Get It Wrong

Here’s where the counter-intuitive part comes in. Many of us, particularly if we experienced childhood misattunement or emotional neglect, learned to ignore, suppress, or override these internal signals. We were taught, implicitly or explicitly, that our authentic feelings were “too much,” inconvenient, or even dangerous. Our nervous systems, in a brilliant act of self-preservation, adapted by creating “role selves” – personas of strength, competence, or self-sufficiency – designed to navigate a world that felt unsafe for authenticity.

For the high-achiever, this manifests as a dangerous efficiency: suppressing vulnerability, pushing through discomfort, and prioritizing external achievement above all else. The relentless entrepreneurial drive itself can become a powerful trauma response – a continuous pursuit of validation or safety through external wins, perpetually running from an unacknowledged internal void. The problem is, when we fight against our internal signals, when we dismiss them as weaknesses or inconvenient emotions, we don’t make them disappear. We simply force them underground. Our bodies then scream louder, manifesting as chronic stress, burnout, subtle health issues, or a pervasive sense of emptiness. We become deeply misattuned to ourselves, and by extension, often to others, because our internal compass is constantly being overridden by survival strategies. This is the ultimate counter-intuitive truth: by resisting our internal signals, by treating them as problems to be fixed rather than messages to be understood, we end up getting less of what we genuinely need – less peace, less connection, less authentic joy.

We often find ourselves perpetually striving, perpetually exhausted, and subtly (or not so subtly) disconnected from the very life we’ve worked so hard to build, the very people we most want to see fulfilled and benefited.

Calibrating Your Internal Compass: The Path to Getting More

The path to getting more of what you need begins with calibration – consciously learning to listen, validate, and respond to your internal signals with curiosity and compassion. This is the essence of true self-attunement and internal “power with” your various parts, rather than “power over” them. It involves:

  • Slowing Down to Listen: Deliberately pausing to notice what you are truly feeling and sensing in your body, even when it’s uncomfortable. This means creating space for breath, mindful movement, or simply quiet reflection.
  • Approaching with Curiosity, Not Judgment: Instead of “Why am I feeling this?” with a tone of exasperation, asking “What is this feeling trying to tell me? What need is it signaling?”
  • Validating Your Experience: Acknowledging that every part of you, every feeling, has a valid reason for being there, even if its strategy is outdated. “It makes sense that this part of me is trying to protect me.”
  • Responding with Compassion: Once the need is identified, actively exploring ways to meet it from your core “real self” – whether it’s a need for rest, safety, connection, or creative expression – rather than resorting to old, costly behaviors.

This process feels counter-intuitive because it demands vulnerability, slowing down, and facing internal discomfort that your protective systems have spent a lifetime avoiding. It means moving away from the familiar “fight” or “flight” (hustle harder, push feelings away) or “freeze” (dissociate, numb out) responses that have seemingly kept you safe. But by genuinely understanding the message behind the signal, you can address the root need directly, effectively, and sustainably.

The Ripple Effect: More Needs Met, Not Less

When you learn to calibrate your internal compass, the ripple effects are profound. You stop wasting energy on maladaptive coping mechanisms. Your nervous system begins to regulate, allowing for greater calm, clarity, and genuine presence. You become a more authentic leader, your intuition sharper, your decision-making more aligned. Your relationships deepen because you can truly attune to others from a place of integrity, setting healthy boundaries and communicating needs with clarity, not coercion. Your children feel truly seen and understood, breaking intergenerational patterns of misattunement.

Investing in attunement isn’t a soft detour from your ambition; it’s the most strategic, foundational investment you can make. It liberates immense energy, fosters true resilience, and unlocks a deeper, more integrated form of success that enriches every aspect of your life – personal, professional, and familial. By listening powerfully to your internal signals, you gain a wisdom that transcends external achievement, ensuring you not only build a formidable legacy, but also live a life rich in genuine connection, peace, and profound fulfillment. Embrace the counter-intuitive power of listening; it’s the path to getting more of everything that truly matters.
